This was one of the most ambitious and successful conversion jobs in Dublin in recent years. I'm not familiar with the history of the original church building. What I do know is that it ceased to function as a church many years ago. It went through many uses from time to time, including as an art centre. Finally (and perhaps this was in the works for a long time too, held up due to neogiations wih the planning authorities), the doors re-opened about fifteen months ago as John M Keating's Café, Bar & Restaurant.
Almost immediately, Keatings became the place to be seen in Dublin. It's a superb job of renovation, preservation and reconstruction. The interior retains almost everything from the original church (some of which, I understand, was specially reacquired by the developer), while the main exterior talking point is the glass-enclosed service shaft which is connected to the main building by a bridge.
This is the first of a series of photos devoted to this building.
